Chiropractic Colorado Springs CO Vertigo Relief

There is more to being dizzy than just having one too many drinks. Vertigo comes in so many different forms and causes that just trying to read about all of them may make you dizzy. Unfortunately, the reality is that vertigo is a common condition that can be debilitating. Fortunately, our Colorado Springs CO chiropractors have been able to help many people suffering with vertigo!

What is Vertigo in Colorado Springs CO?

Vertigo is the medical definition of dizziness, and often patients with vertigo experience a sensation that the room is spinning around them. This type of vertigo is often due to benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, aka BPPV, and is caused by a disorder in the inner ear. When this is the true cause of vertigo for a patient, the most common treatment is through physical therapy or treatments known as Epley’s maneuver or the BBQ roll. These treatments can successfully relieve vertigo, but only when the vertigo is coming from the inner ear.

What Can Cause Vertigo?

Vertigo may also manifest due to problems with the eyes. When the nerves and microscopic muscles that control eye movement are functioning properly, a patient may get a feeling of dizziness, especially when having to move the eyes or focus on different depths of perception in the environment. When this is the case, a specialized optometrist known as a neuro-optometrist or functional neurologist may give active exercise to help strengthen the weakness in the eye functions.

Lastly, the upper neck may be a major culprit to vertigo. After an injury like a concussion or whiplash, the skull and bones in the upper neck often misalign. This shift in the alignment at the top of the neck can put abnormal stress on the spinal cord, nerves, and muscles around the base of the skull. Since these nerves and muscles play a major role in communicating your level of balance and equilibrium in upright posture to the brain, this foundational shift can cause chronic dizziness in a patient until it is corrected.

Imagine walking around with your head tilted to one side. It would probably seem much harder to walk in a straight path or even catch a ball coming towards you. This is due to the disruption of accurate information about your upright posture to the brain. While you can tilt your head for a brief instance and be totally fine, what if your head is stuck in that tilted position from a previous injury?

How Can Chiropractors at Balance Chiropractic Help?

While traditional chiropractors may do a great job at increasing range of motion and decreasing muscle spasms, Balance Chiropractic focuses on correcting that foundational shift through the NUCCA procedure. By specializing in the NUCCA procedure, the doctors at Balance Chiropractic can reduce the tilt in the skull and upper. As the patient begins to hold their correction, the stress on the nerves and muscles around the base of the skull is reduced, re-establishing the balanced connection between the brain and body, and reducing the need to get adjusted repeatedly.
